Background

Hugh’s been a musician all his life – a bass guitarist in heavy and classic rock bands, and in an original-music reggae ska band; and singer guitarist in various function bands. Plus he’s led a life outside music: as a commando soldier, an author, television presenter and journalist.

He’s a story-teller; in his songs, and also when engaging with audiences. His career as an author took him on three coast-to-coast USA book promotion tours. Engagement with widely varied audiences comes naturally.

Hugh writes from personal experience, so his work includes contemporary war protest songs. You can listen to an example “Fighting Season” above. (He fought in the Falklands War with the Special Boat Squadron.)

For five years Hugh was The Sunday Times’ Defence Correspondent.  His television career included co-presenting the popular 2001 survival series on BBC 2  – “Bare Necessities“.

When this genuinely fun show was replaced by “I’m a Celebrity… Get me Out of Here“,  Hugh decided to give up telly – both appearing on it and watching it. He made a very happy to return to authorship; then began writing his own music.

TESTIMONIALS

Jon Wilmer, Organiser, Promoter and Booker, Chinnor Bike Dayz Festival, Oxfordshire:

“Hugh McManners has played my festival a total of four times: with his rock band, a reggae band and twice on his own.
Last summer (2018) he played us a one-hour solo acoustic set, performing new material from his Linden Tree Band then finishing with few rock covers. The audience thoroughly enjoyed and engaged, with many complimentary comments afterwards. Ever the professional, he even brought his own microphones and cables. Highly recommended!”
